Flourishing Together | DJ Emily Knurr

Music can easily become a last-minute detail that a couple considers before their wedding, but trust me when I say that it makes all the difference in how much fun your guests have.

That’s why this week I spoke with Colorado’s own female DJ Emily Knurr, who in my personal opinion is a girl boss extraordinaire who stands in a booth that’s usually designated for men.

Below are a few of her tips + tricks for selecting the best music for your wedding!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself + what you do!

Hi! My name is Emily and I'm a 26 year old wedding DJ.

2. What's your favorite part of DJ-ing weddings?

I would have thought that my favorite part of DJing would be something music related, but I've actually fallen in love with the toasts. It's such a fun way to understand the group I'm with and the dynamics at play (for better or worse). Haha!

3. What's your go to song to get people dancing?

I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston is one I frequently use to get things started, it appeals to most audiences you'll find at a wedding! I also love throwing in Suavemente by Elvis Crespo later in the evening, there's usually a point where everyone believes they suddenly know how to salsa dance.

4. Any favorite wedding trends from this season?

I am ALL about photo booths! Have you seen PictureBooth? It's my personal favorite! They ship you the whole thing, it's sleek and super easy to set up and gives the best photos! I've seen them at many events over the years and it's helped preserve some of my favorite memories.

5. Favorite way to relax after a long day?

Particularly after weddings, my brain is pretty overstimulated, so I try and seek out some quietness. A bath is usually my go-to way to unwind.

6. What do you tell people who are stuck between wanting a DJ or a band at their wedding?

Both options are great, but I think the variety a DJ brings to a wedding is amazing. For example: I don't just play music, a lot of times I'm running sound for the ceremony, mixing live musicians, emceeing, etc. I think hiring a DJ can cover more of your bases than other options!
